Macross Frontier’s Ranka Lee has taken the entire otaku population by storm with the now infamous (ﾉゝ∀･)~キラ☆, which I will interchangeably replace with \m/. Two friends of Wolf Hurricane struck especially hard by this moe hurricane include Shin and C.I. If you can, please wish well for these two and everyone affected by Hurricane Ranka. All other otaku are advised to buckle down and wait for the storm to pass. And now Meu with sports…
Supporters of \m/ have been very vocal in expressing their love for this latest anime craze. All the naysayers, if there are any, are keeping quiet for fear of being lynched by mobs of Ranka fanboys. Even I’ll admit to liking this craze too. But I must ask, how long will \m/ hold up in this world of passing fads and internet memes? Does it have the lasting power to be remembered years after the show’s run (ie. Hare Hare Yukai), or is it destined to be forgotten and fade into obscurity as a moe gimmick?
The wager: (ﾉゝ∀･)~キラ☆ – \m/ will be forgotten a year from now.
The stakes: Absolutely nothing.

The more I think about it, \m/ could really look like a gang sign if otaku go around flashing it to each other… If it didn’t look so fruity.
I’m sure something far cuter will come along soon. Just not soon enough.
Yeah, it’ll be forgotten – it’s cute and everything, but I don’t think it has the staying power of ‘uguu~’ or… well, I really can’t think of any other unforgettable moe expression (vocal, physical, or other) that’s been around for a long time (it seems like ‘hanyan’ and ‘hoe’ have both passed out of the general vernacular for better or worse). And given the sheer amount of those we’ve had, I’d say the odds are against it.
