I was browsing the fall series when I noticed something.

A new upcoming series by Gonzo. The art on the mech page seems to show cel-references. I almost can’t remember the last time Gonzo ever not did mecha with 3D, but maybe they’ve had enough feedback to make the change back to 2D? Or is this a huge red herring? Who knows? Either way, it seems like Gonzo’s on the verge of going kaput, from what I gather from my lurkerisms, which is a shame since despite their many flaws, they did come up with Last Exile and Gankutsuou, which are both top-grade series. (Though, to be fair, even a lot of the 3D in those were pretty sub-par…) It’s rather ironic how I maintain a clearly love-hate relationship with them, but time to time the waiting does pay off.

At any rate, I just posted this to bring up a point: Would you be sorry to see them go, or will you smirk and send them a “Good riddance!” card?

Addendum: Watched a Linebarrels trailer on Youtube. It seems the fight scenes are still predominantly 3D. Although there seems to be some 2D in it… Hrm. Well, they had the mech designer from Zone of the Enders do the mechs so if they can get some decent-quality ZOE2 3D maybe it won’t be so bad.

  1. Gonzo is the most “foreign fans”-friendly anime studio there is, and for that I love them.

I hope Kurogane no Linebarrel will be on BOST.

  2. If they do disappear – and I’ll believe that when I see it (or rather, when I don’t see them) – it’d be a sad thing. Gonzo have their points, as you say they’ve made some decent anime in the past and as Anonymous says they, or their overlords, have been willing to try BOST (maybe it was financial desperation that drove them to it, but still . . .)

  3. Just for Last Exile, I pray Gonzo doesn’t go under.

  4. I love-hate Gonzo too. They’ve had their share of excellent series (Gankutsuou, Last Exile, Welcome to the NHK) and decent series (Strike Witches, Tower of Druaga, Seto no Hanayome).

The big difference maker is that Gonzo also had some big flops (Final Fantasy Unlimited, Black Cat, Dragonaut). FFU and Black Cat flopped especially hard, Manu Ginobli style.

I don’t think Gonzo will be going away because they seem to be wising up with their failures. Linebarrels looks decent enough at first glance, so maybe it’ll steal some of Gundam 00′s viewer base.

  5. After what they did to my beloved Bokurano and Rosario + Vampire (who’s raping will continue tomorrow, with season II), not only will I send a good riddance card, I’ll hold a Getting-Lost Party
