Namco Bandai to Release Two Versions of Tales of Hearts
Posted by: Noirsword in DS, Games, NewsI’m not really into the Tales franchise, but this bit of news from Kotaku was pretty intriguing. Apparently Namco Bandai is going to let consumers pick their poison by releasing two versions of the DS game. One will utilize anime cutscenes while the other will feature CG cutscenes to further the story.
The franchise’s style has always favored traditional anime designs and this version looks better. Of course the new generation of gamers are spoiled on CG graphics, so that may give the CG version the edge. Which one would you guys pick?

Well, the one with anime cutscenes looks more like Tales should look. I think the other version is just to reach gamers who don’t like anime cutscenes.
And of course in my opinion the anime cutscenes are better. But I’ll try to buy both of them for my collection, even if I can’t japanese.

I’m not into this franchise either, but if I were I’d pick the anime-style version. The characters are nicer to look at.
Case in point: the girl dressed as a witch (can’t put a name to her, sorry). In the anime version she looks like a happy little magician out to spread good in the world; in the CG version she looks like an evil spirit who drowns kittens for pleasure and has a mind bent on murder. (No joke – that’s the impression I got.)

@Sephix: Yeah, the CG version is probably more oriented towards the mainstream/casual gamers that shun all things anime, but the franchise and storytelling are still geared for anime fans. This will either be a brilliant move or end disastrously. I hope Namco Bandai has disaster insurance.
@Diego: Now that you mention it… I see what you mean. Definitely creepy~
There’s always a certain charm to 2D that can never be replicated in 3D.
My only complain? THIS SHOULD BE ON THE PSP INSTEAD!
