I’ve been doing some research on the Lycee card game and it’s really intrigued me. I like visual novels and have always been a sucker for a fun card game. I guess this is one of those things I always heard about but didn’t notice until now. Now that it has my attention, the game looks very, very cool.

Type-Moon, Key, Leaf and Nitroplus are among the most prominent of the featured properties. The big draw lies in the franchise mixing aspect that lets you combine your favorite characters from several visual novels into a 60 card deck. So in theory you could have Kanon/Tsukihime, Higurashi/ToHeart, Clannad/Utawarerumono/Jingai Makyo or whatever suits your taste.

The game itself looks to play like a combination of Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. If someone that’s more familiar with the game mechanics is reading this, feel free to correct me because this is just my initial impression. I’ll probably buy a deck and some boosters in the near future… When I have some spare cash. Not like I can read the card text much less find someone to play against. Anyway, what are the best online Lycee retailers for someone living in the US?

  1. @C.I.: You want to play card games. Yes you do.

  2. The only card game I play on a regular basis is Solitaire. On my work laptop. And only because the IT guys won’t let us install better games on company hardware.

    This strikes me as the perfect bait for trading card game noobs like myself: plaster illustrations of well-known characters all over the products, then dangle them in front of existing fans of the original properties.

  3. It’s a trap, guys! Don’t do it! O_O

  4. @Diego: The cross franchise aspect of the game is really tempting me to buy a box or two. Type-Moon, Key and other big VN properties in the same place. Dood!

    @Meu: TRAP CARD!

  5. If I remember correctly, there was a US distributor of this stuff. Broccoli, perhaps?

  6. @Zeroblade: No luck searching the Broccoli sites. It’s not like importing is a problem but the shipping charges from Japan is killer. Guess I’ll continue to look around.

  7. Looks interesting but I think if I was going to get back into card games it would be Yu-Gi-Oh as I still have most of my cards for it.
