Fall 2008 Anime Impressions Part III
Posted by: Noirsword in Anime, Articles, First Impressions
We conclude our fall impressions with Kannagi, Tales of the Abyss, Tytania, Yozakura Quartet and the final breakdown of my top picks for the season. Ready, steady, go!
Kannagi – Crazy Shrine Maidens:

The nose bandage look is soooo 1989.

LIES! My bandage is cool. You’re just jealous!

Who is this shrine maiden and why is she so crazy?

That must be why.

Why did no one ever tell me that people die when they are killed?

Got a dead body? Magical Girl Nagi will clean up the mess, no questions asked!

The taiyaki is a lie.

Scandalous~
A weird but cute ‘sudden girlfriend appearance’ anime. A guy named Jin carves a statue of a girl from the wood of a sacred tree, and the spirit of the tree takes the form of a girl named Nagi, who requests Jin’s help to exorcise impurities that are running around. I found Kannagi enjoyable enough, so it’ll probably end up on my watchlist for the season. Looks like this will turn into a harem as more girls are introduced.
Recommended and definitely worth a watch.
Tales of the Abyss:

A hot girl at my side, beautiful flowers everywhere… Did I just die and go to Paradise?
Meultima: Having not played the game, I’m not really sure what to expect here, but it’s been a somewhat entertaining piece of work so far. The animation and fight scenes boast a certain polished level of quality, and the story seems to have some promise seeing how it appears to be a faithful adaptation so far, or so I’ve heard.
And Tear is kinda hot. That helps too.
Not the strongest of introductions, but the promise of a faithful RPG adaptation piques my curiosity.
Tytania:

Even in space, real men drink tea.

We look damn good and we know it.

Yes, there is a stage on the bridge. Got a problem with that?

I’m feeling absolutely fabulous today. Thanks for asking.

Fan Hulic aka Admiral Bubblegum.

Chicks dig phallic ships.

Commence all fire on B-4!

You sunk my battleship!

Being pompous is hard work too.

Looks like a trap but she’s a girl. Honest.
Space opera full of bishies. The focus is on the elite members of the Tytania clan, the power behind an empire that is conquering the known galaxy. The aforementioned Tytania clan is also downright brutal. They pretty much view themselves as the ultimate power in space, so basically everyone including their allies hates their guts. The way the first episode is presented it seems the war will be told from both sides of the story, but the focus appears to be on the Tytania clan more than Fan Hulic. However, this is just speculation since I’m unfamiliar with the original novels.
Tytania runs with the space opera motif as the bridge of the Tytania command ship actually has a stage complete with drawing curtain. The show is chock full of good old fashioned tactical warfare, political manuevering and epic tea pouring. Overall I thought this was pretty cool. I’m especially impressed since this is a genre I usually don’t watch.
If you dare miss this show then Bright Slap yourself across the face for me.
Yozakura Quartet:

The name’s Hime. H-I-M-E. Got it memorized?

They’re always after my lucky charm.

Akina, the obligatory human.

It takes special skill to ruin instant ramen.

In shounen it usually doesn’t take much to surprise the good guys.

Wanna have some fun baby?

The Yozakura Quartet Quintet

Didn’t your mother tell you it’s rude to stick your tongue out?
Average shounen. It’s pretty much about a group of super powered friends that do all sorts of odd jobs including protecting the town from bad guys. I like the character designs but their personalities lack originality. Nothing about the show is particularly good or bad. It’s simply average. The most interesting thing about Yozakura Quartet is Hime’s scarf. No joke. That thing is fascinating.
Not good, not bad. Just meh.

Epic tea-pouring is epic. We has different taste it seems when it comes to shounen…
But epic manly tea-pouring is epic.

@Panther: I’ll pour a magnificent tea blend… And give it to you! Yes, I guess we have different shounen taste. Perhaps I’ve just become too jaded with the generic genre.
most of my favorites fall in your worth trying section
oh well atleast you tell people to give them a chance! haha Although I definitely love Index
@ThePoop: I think everything is worth trying at least once, if you know what I mean.
I know this post is old but I happened to come across it when searching for an anime to watch.
I loved the captions under the images, they made me laugh so hard that I almost started crying. I especially liked “Even in space, real men drink tea.” because my boyfriend is crazy about Orange Pekoe tea!
