>>The umbrella could’ve been anything: a book, a cat, etc…, it didn’t really matter.

Reeeeally?

>>The umbrella cliche applies to the romance genre as a whole and has pretty much ingrained itself as a staple of romance shows.

The blue umbrella in particular is important here; A Day Without Me is correct in asserting that it began with Maria-sama ga Miteru. Because see, it's not just about being a reinforcement of relationship. Marimite made the blue umbrella into a symbol of emo trainwreck and unnecessary drama. (I'm not trying to say anything bad about Marimite—I loved it—but those last few episodes of Haru were kind of painful.)

Strawberry Panic followed up on this in a hilariously shitty attempt at "omg drama" and it was hilarious. It's not just an umbrella anymore; it's the blue yuri umbrella.

Rainy Blue. NEVAR FORGET.

Though, I'd disagree with A Day on the topic of Candy Boy; I don't think it really follows the tradition, because, at the end of the day, the characters are talking to each other and comfortable with each other. The twins are way closer than Yumi&Sachiko or the various random lesbians of Strawberry Panic. An important part of the blue umbrella is that the solution to the umbrella problem is not the solution to the overall situation—Yumi is still hurt and crying when Rainy Blue ends.

ANYWAY long comment is getting too long so I'll just say that Candy Boy needs more global warming.

The umbrella cliche applies to the romance genre as a whole and has pretty much ingrained itself as a staple of romance shows. I agree that the umbrella is best used when it's casually inserted into the plot to reinforce a relationship rather than having it forced into the story just to have it.

I loved that episode of Strawberry Panic and the way it was full of lesbians. You make it sound as if they were trying to accomplish something with the umbrella, when in actuality, it was just a shallow filler episode. The umbrella could've been anything: a book, a cat, etc..., it didn't really matter. I should write a post about this...
