I really liked “Guards! Guards!”, which follows his police unit, but I’ve been a long-time mystery reader. Actually, I’ve liked all the City Watch books.

For parody of higher education, possibly “The Last Continent”. He hasn’t written about the wizards in a while but that was the last one I enjoyed.

The problem with finding a good starting point is that he’s created a universe but has several different groups that he writes about in it. They all have their own timeline that is in sync with every elses. It sounds confusing but it’s really not. You could pick up most Pratchett books, read them, and understand most of it without having to read the previous ones.

I've always found commenting and keeping up with the sphere to be harder than writing posts, but it's a good way to get commenters and it's also a good way to learn. @Caitlin: I avidly read Stackpole’s X-Wing series and a lot of various Expanded Universe stuff, but Star Wars novels don’t have the same charm for me anymore. Any particular Pratchett novels you’d recommend? I never know good starting points for authors that are new to me.
