Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th, White Album, and Maria†Holic, go!

I decided to take a slightly different approach this time with first impressions – watching one episode of a series, after all, can’t really tell you much about it, so I thought I’d watch the first two or three episodes of the series I said I’d preview before passing judgment.

Maria-sama ga Miteru 4th

First Impression: More Medabots, more power! soeur action, more fun.

Other Impressions: Actually, one of the things I’m enjoying about seeing this fourth season is comparing the animation with the first season’s – its very subtle, but you can definitely tell that the technology has improved since the first incarnation. I’m also appreciating that things aren’t as melodramatic as they were from the get-go in MaiMite~Haru~ – the ladies of MariMite are getting older, and you can actually sense that they are maturing, something that is extremely refreshing given how many shows do NOT feature casts who mature emotionally or mentally at all.

Glad I Watched It Because: It’s MariMite, how could I not be glad I watched it?

Will Keep Watching Because: I’m still hoping for a Yumi x Sei moment I’m still hoping Sachiko’s cousin will jump Yumi’s brothers bones Yumi and Touko are very interesting to watch interact, especially when you consider that they look like they’re going to become soeur and petite soeur. I’m also looking forward to seeing the girl that Yoshino will choose as her soeur.

First Impressions: Wait, why did this get such a good treatment art-wise?

Other Impressions: The anti-MariMite. Actually, a few people I know have been a bit offended by this, and while I can see why (Kanako doesn’t get a very human treatment and ends up as just a walking loser fanboy’s idea of what a lesbian is), the whole thing is kind of too stupid to get upset about. I laughed. A lot. And drooled at the arthouse-ness that we all knew Akiyuki Shinbo would bring to the proceedings.

Glad I Watched It Because: I’m a sap for Shinbo’s direction-style.

Will Keep Watching It Because: It doesn’t require the use of my brain. And also because of the art.

White Album

First Impressions: Welcome to the 80’s!

Other Impressions: Wait, welcome to the 80’s? Wish it showed a little more, I was a bit underwhelmed after the initial ten minutes or so. Anyway, as for what is supposed to actually matter, this is a fairly competent ‘harem’ show thus far (I’ve watched two episodes). Too bad it also comes with the trappings of the idol genre.

Glad I Watched It Because: Idolm@ster Xenoglossia had me fooled into thinking that I was ok with the idol genre.

Will Keep Watching It Because: Err, I might watch another episode, but all that idol junk just isn’t my taste at all. Random bitchy rivals doing random bitchy things? Boring.

I was going to also review Axis Powers Hetalia… but that’s kind of in a no-man’s land at the moment, so I can’t say when any impression of that might crop up, sorry.

  1. Now this means I have to put up my impressions post/s. How fiendish!

Here’s my two cents: I absolutely, positively loved Maria Holic as I tend to do with Shaft comedies, because it was so genuinely hilarious. Their art house style should only be used for the power of comedy. White Album nearly put me in a vegetative state, and Aya Hirano isn’t helping that show’s cause either. Unfortunately I can’t say too much about Maria Sama because I would have to watch the previous three seasons before this one.

  2. I watched the first 10 minutes of White album and that’s all the farther I got, it bored the living hell out of me… and Maria Holic I’m still watching, it’s not the best but it’s entertaining at the least. MariMite I’ll have to catch up on the first 3 seasons before I can begin to watch.

  3. [...] A Day Without Me already covered this a while ago, but here’s my two cents. Maria Holic is a prime example of the type of show SHAFT does best — comedy. While not as outrageously funny as Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Maria Holic is still a laugh riot in its own right. Expect lots of SHAFT bizareness at its finest. Not for the faint of heart, children, the elderly, and people afraid of yuri and traps. [...]
