@IKnight: The SZS cast is about as one-dimensional as a cast can be, in a good way of course. I love watching the interactions between the personalities that all have a conflicting state of mind. Psychological comedy at its best.

Comedy is my favorite genre, but it is kind of hard to name dark comedies besides the obvious ones. Apparently people prefer fanservice and boobies with their comedy instead of dark humor. =/

I quite like comic heroes with no redeeming qualities - in fact, I'd make the same complaint about SZS. It's a cynical show, certainly, but none of the characters (inasmuch as they are characters, and not representatives of personality traits and states) possess quite the petty, hopeless cowardice of someone like Basil Fawlty or Jim Hacker (probably not well-known examples, but then I don't watch much comedy). Maria Holic I can't pronounce on, though, as I haven't really seen enough of it. IKnights last blog post...‘Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Zabi . . .

@IKnight: They always have to have a heart of gold, otherwise they have absolutely no redeeming qualities at all. Regardless Daichi is still different from the protagonist norm with his lewd sense of humor, especially towards Melon and Najimi. If you prefer darker comedy, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Maria Holic are perfect for you.

And yeah, the QUALITY animation does suck something fierce.

I liked Akikan, but dropped it when the hero's heart of gold was revealed. If he'd remained consistently a perverted sociopath, I would have kept up with it despite the animation.
