This is the Post Where You, the Readers, Tell Me What to Watch
Posted by: Noirsword in Anime, Personal
Please be gentle. It’s my first time… Asking for recommendations.
After slogging through a lengthy backlog over the summer, I’ve hit a wall and can’t quite decide what to watch next. If left to my own devices I’ll probably just pick up more moe drivel, so that’s why I’m asking Wolf Hurricane’s kind readers to tell me what to watch next. There are times when even veterans don’t know what to watch and need a helping hand. Just be sure to wash said hand before helping me — I don’t know where it’s been. If you need an idea of what I’ve seen and liked so far, I’ll pimp my MyAnimeList page for you, with the ulterior motive of feeding my e-peen. Yes my e-peen, grow. Grow!
After being thoroughly pimped to and satisfying my e-peen, throw some recommendations at me, whether they’re from my ever growing Plan to Watch list or something totally new and exciting. Hell, I may even rewatch stuff from my drop list if you can make a good case for them. I do have an overwhelming preference for slice of life, comedy and action, but I’ll keep my mind open with a few conditions.
1. I don’t like explicit gore so stuff like Elfen Lied and Gantz will get rejected faster than the “nice guy” in a shoujo love story. I guess light gore is okay when it’s stylized and quick ala Claymore, though I prefer the level of violence to not go beyond blood when possible.
2. I’m allergic to the typical romance shoujo/josei. They’re enjoyable when done a certain way like Escaflowne, Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, Natsume Yuujinchou and Higashi no Eden so it’s not like I totally dislike this genre. Also some of my favorite shows are romances such as KyoAni’s KEY triumvirate, though the romances I like are admittedly harem-esque shows geared toward a male audience. Romance as a whole is fine, but I prefer to avoid overblown love-love shoujo dorama. Your version of overblown and my version are different, but I’ll try to keep an open mind if you want to recommend stuff that falls into this genre.
3. The Never Ending Shounen is something I prefer to avoid as well. The only NES I’m remotely keeping up with right now is Gintama and that’s enough. As good as One Piece is it’s just too friggin’ long and too much of a commitment.
4. Don’t recommend Bible Black. It’s an old joke that’s no longer funny. Well, it’s kind of funny, but don’t recommend it unless you want to be brutally slapped by a loli with an iron harisen. Knowing otaku demographics that’s not much of a deterrent… But you get the idea.
With that out of the way go nuts and recommend stuff to me. If you want to turn the tables, I can recommend stuff to you too. What a crazy world we live in!

im no good at recommending, lol u hate NES that much, they are good to pass time with.
anyways see if u like any titles from my list http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Chimasternmay
you should get to work on your plan to watch list. There are some really good shows in there. I can vouch for Dennou Coil, Ghost hound, Ramen fighter Miki, Seirei no moribito, shigofumi and Zegapain.
Of the currently airing stuff you can try Guin Saga.
since you are not completely opposed to Shoujo/Josei you can try Lovely complex.
I find it odd that you liked the R.O.D. OVA and did not check out the TV series.
Not a lot of mecha stuff in your list. I assume there is a reason for that so there is probably a reason that the Full Metal Panic series isn’t there.
You are missing classics like Last Exile.
As for Shounen stuff I found Kekkaishi to be above average after a weak start and Kenichi is a lot of fun.
I see LOGH is on hold. Now might be the time to blast though some of those episodes. I am currently enjoying it again.
I can also second Lovely Complex as its a great series over all with nice balance of romance, relationships, and comedy.
You might wanna pick up Detroit Metal City or Sexy Commando Gaiden: Sugoiyo!! Masaru-san for some ridiculous comedy. Or Moyashimon for some lighter but just as awesome comedy.
I guess I could recommend Seto no Hanayome. I really like the first season of Jigoku Shoujo. I’ll throw down Kannagi, Darker than Black and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann for flavour.
Also consider doing a longer movie post. It’ll be interesting to try all of the great 1080p Blu-Ray Anime movie releases out there.
ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER
Darker than Black
Terra e
Dennou Coil
Ghost Hound
Seirei no Moribito
ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER
Planetes
Last Exile
Guin Saga (I told you)
Yakushiji Ryoko no Kaiki Jikenbo
Kaiba
Natsume Yuujinchou
ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER
Actually I have not seen what you have watched so yeah, but whatever floats your boat in my recommendations!
Also.

I would second the Lovely Complex and Gurren Lagann recommendations. I add in Detroit Metal City, Moyashimon, and Sexy Commando Gaiden; which will satify your comedic needs. Also this might be the time to blast though some episodes of LOGH which you have on hold. I am currently watching it for the second time and loving every minute. Sorry if this post is a double (my last comment didn’t seem to go though).
Finish Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
Erm, why is Code Geass on hold, in the name of all that is holy?
Shigofumi, get it off the “Plan to watch” and just watch it. Be papred to have your emotions toyed with.
I haven’t watched it yet, but if you’ve liked Mai-HiME, why not try Mai-Otome?

Thanks for the recommends so far everyone. Now to business…
@Chimasternmay: You have a massive list, but I do note you have 163 on the ‘To Watch’ list. Have you never, ever dropped a show before? >_>
@Lesterf1020: I guess that would be as good a place as any to resume my path to anime enlightenment.
Guin Saga looks very bizarre with the leopard headed man and all, but it shall go somewhere on my list once I whittle my watch list down some more.
I’ll try Lovely Complex as long as it isn’t too girly for lack of a better word.
I’ve seen ROD TV but forgot all about it. The young Noirsword wasn’t a huge fan of the TV version which is probably why I forgot about it.
You could tell I’m not a huge mecha fan, but FMP is worth trying at least considering it’s done well enough to have a couple sequels.
Again forgot to add Last Exile, which I had on hold anyway. It’s been so long I need to start over again.
Shounen are fine as long as they don’t go on forever, but they’re admittedly kind of low priority for me so it’ll be a while before I get around to them.
@ilikewhiterice: I’ll compile your reply into one and voila! All duly noted, and I’ll probably tackle Moyashimon and DMC fairly soon since they’re short. LoGH is nothing but excellence but daunting as hell at 110 episodes, two ~24 episode OVAs and three movies. One episode at a time. One episode at a time.
@Adrian: Already seen Kannagi and am slugging through TTGL at this moment. I enjoyed Seto no Hanayome but had to put it on the backburner while it was airing and subsequently forgot to pick it up again. I wasn’t too crazy about Jigoku Shoujo and DtB when they aired. Oddly enough most people I know loved JS, but I probably won’t pick it up again. DtB will get a second chance from me when the chaos of my hectic list settles down.
I personally would rather see more TV series get US Blu-Ray releases. I want mah AIR and K-ON in HD damn it!
@Panther: How dare you not feed my e-peen! All duly noted. Row your boat along, Space Panther.
@Guy: I didn’t care for all of CG’s nationalistic Pro-Japan propaganda and dropped it about 3/4 through. I also didn’t like Mai Hime enough to warrant watching what most fans call an inferior sequel. Maybe I’m unconsciously anti-Sunrise or something. I will however watch Shigofumi and probably cry. My tissues are ready for giant manly tears of sadness.
CG, pro-Japan propaganda? O.o
Yes, there’s seemingly that, but it’s a tool employed by the lead, not something he really believes.
And in general, what is the propaganda? “Hear us, we want to be acknowledged as a people and a sovereign state”? That’s the wish of every nationality, and their nationality-hood is even defined as such. There is very little to no, “We are Japanese, so we are good because…”

Oh Lovely complex is really good!!!!! It’s one of my favorites…
I’m surprised you didn’t watch Read or die (R.O.D) T.V. series, the OVA sucks, well, I didn’t like it that much, but the series is really good. The first episodes are ok, but it gets a LOT better.
I see you have Xam’d Lost Memories in your plan to watch, PLEASE DO…. Is really something….incomprehensible hahaha. It is.
My animelist is http://myanimelist.net/animelist/animenewbie , I sent you a friend request.

Oh, I recommend Real Drive http://myanimelist.net/anime/3363/Real_Drive
is a little slow, an acquired taste… but maybe you’ll like it.

oh haha yeah i never drop something i pick up, there were like only 3 anime i thought about dropping but i went through them and watched it, but just gave it a low score.
My plan to watch is big, but i don’t plan to START watching all of them, so ones i don’t start won’t necessarily be dropped anime.
This is a lot of stuff, so I’ll take my time going through all of them starting with the shorter series. That’s probably enough for now…
@Guy: To me the whole vibe of the show went a step above nationalism and absolutely reeked of fervent Japanese patriotism. I’ve never looked at patriotism as a positive thing as it eventually leads to intolerance of varying degrees when you believe your country is superior to others. In the case of CG it was usually “Look at Japanese people getting killed by those dirty Britannians and they’re calling us 11′s! Doesn’t it make you RAEG?!”. I believe either the director or producer is known to endorse a Pro-Japan agenda as well. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel most things endorsing patriotism are a form of brain washing.
@Aime: ROD OVA was relatively good considering its quick pace in a short time span. Then again I heavily gravitated towards action, action and more action when I was younger, which the TV series lacked in comparison. I do say this line a lot, but I’ll be sure to pick it up again — Probably from the beginning since I don’t remember much.
@Chimasternmay: Eh. Don’t be afraid to drop things you don’t like. Time is short and it’s better spent watching things you enjoy. Then again judging from your list you enjoy everything.
REC, Black Lagoon, Mezzo, Kino’s Journey, and Soul Eater. Also for a comedy I’d recommend Skip Beat! but it’s technically a shoujo even though there isn’t any romance between the heroine and other characters…I think it’s unique enough to make your list but that’s just me because I’m a total fanatic for this series.
I haven’t watched it myself yet but it seems like you might like Baccano!
Skip the ROD TV Series imo, the OVAs were way better. Although the series does have a twist that’s interesting if you’ve seen the OVAs.

Lelouch was not too bad if you ignored the japanish tendencies of so on & so foth
otherwise: black lagoon+Gurren Lagann
@lovelyduckie: Heard of all of the first bunch at some time or another and will also add this to my now bloated To Watch list. I’ve been getting through Kino’s Journey very slowly. Shoujo in and of itself is okay, but too many bishies scare me away. It took me a long time to work up the courage to try Ouran, and that’s mostly because they parody bishie cliches. Meu has always given me an earful about trying Baccano… And I’ll get around to it when I get around to it. I watch stuff slowly. Thanks for the recommendations nonetheless. Your input’s appreciated and you get a lovely rubber duckie.
I need to start Baccano! too. I put it on my computer but the subbing was too bad on the first episode so I put it on hold until I could find episode 1 done better. I can’t blame you for finding bishies scary at all, I have a beauty line they can’t cross without me being creeped out. But still try Skip Beat! imo
I will haunt you now every time you want a recommendation. BEWARE!
Just yesterday I was floundering for another series myself, did a bit of Ergo Proxy (2 episodes), and then did a bit of Minami-ke (1 episode) and then decided on Detective Conan (6 episodes). Although Detective Conan is a big commitment! Its been running even longer then One Piece. It seems like the type of series that’s fun to watch in big chunks every once in a while. Plus the old animation style got me all nostalgic.

Well, I’m gonna watch (Belladonna of Sadness (Kanashimi no Belladonna) and Wonderful Days (Blue Sky). And you’re gonna watch, err, uh . . . Sword of the Stranger (Mukoh Hadan)–no, wait! I’ll watch that to.
Watch Xam’d Lost Memories. You can stop watching Princess Lover until the DVD is out. Forget Ramen Fighter Miki (well, watch the first and the last episodes). If haven’t gotten into Kino’s Journey by the 4th or 5th show then don’t bother. And finish watching RideBack, so I don’t have to. =P
And Baccano!, well, Takahiro Omori dropped the ball on a cool story IMO. =(
well, i would really like to recommend higurashi no naku koro ni and higurashi no naku koro ni kai.
after watching episode 25 (or 24) of kai, i realized that the other 50 episodes were worth it xD.
here is my list if you guys want to see http://myanimelist.net/animelist/thethorndog
and i have some vids in youtube too!

@lovelyduckie: Those bishies question my sexuality. They’re too smexy.
@Gerent: Let’s split our watch load and synch our knowledge bases afterwards. It’ll be like we’re two people with a complete, normal brain. Genius! Yeah, I was thinking of putting PL on hold because of all that bullshit censorship. Needs moar bare breasts and panty shots, right dood? I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen of Kino’s Journey, and I’ll resume it again when I’m ready since it seems to be an episodic series anyway. RideBack is good but the subject matter doesn’t hold my interest.
@thethorndog: I misread your name for a second there… Yeah, since everyone splooges themselves for Higurashi, I’ll try to get back to it once I’m done with Umineko.
what its umineko? is it another season of higurashi?
@thethorndog: Umineko is the spiritual successor/indirect sequel to Higurashi or something along those lines.
My world was blown away when I realized that some beautiful figures I wanted were what were called “traps” – gorgeous men dressed as women…this hobby never ceases to surprise me
