While browsing the early list of fall shows, nothing pops out at me besides Clannad: After Story, Toradora!, and maybe ef - a tale of melodies. Anticipation for Clannad is very high. Toradora is yet another light novel with the tired ‘guy meets girl/s’ premise (Haruhi, Shana, Zero no Tsukaima, Haruka Nogizaka) but hey, I’m a sucker for these. I may check out the next iteration of ef if Miyako Miyamura either gets no screen time or drops dead. Ugh. Damn Miyako.

I see a bunch of sequels to shows I didn’t watch or dropped, so those are automatically off my list. Let’s cross off Jigoku Shoujo, Gundam 00, Rosario to Vampire, Junjou Romantica, Nodame Cantabile, and Vampire Knight. I may pick up and finish the first season of Nodame Cantabile in time to see the sequel, so that omission isn’t set in stone. The rest still get a very apathetic shrug. So what else does that leave us with? Not much. Aside from all the sequels that loyal fans will watch no matter what, the new shows aren’t exactly awe inspiring. Fall season is supposed to be, you know, more exciting than this.

Meanwhile, Tohko and Shiki undertake a job to find the murderer and bring her back dead or alive.

Mecha in Code Geass

We’ve all seen the claims. “Code Geass is not a mecha anime.” I would tend to agree, at least for the first season. The Sutherlands were nothing special, same with the modified Glasgows, the Burai. Then there was the Lancelot. It was pretty much used to offset Lelouch’s tactical and strategic mastery. Fine. That works, can’t just have Lelouch steamroll everything. The Guren Nishiki appears as a rival for the Lancelot and it works out well in that role, despite the Lance still smashing things. The Gawain even makes sense. Its armaments are a pair of Hadron Cannons and ten Slash Harkens. The former is obviously a ranged bombardment gun while the latter doesn’t even see much use until near the end. The Lancelot’s flight upgrade is expected and it doesn’t turn it into hax. So, season one isn’t mecha heavy.

Sora undertakes her first magic request, but Hara warns her that this client is very peculiar. The client, Motohashi, is an older woman with a request to open her safe. This woman does not have the key but always locks the safe again after checking the contents, so she is continually calling upon the mages to unlock the safe when she wants to look inside. Likewise, all the other students in the mage class undertake their own requests except for Gouta who is still a novice.

Wolf Hurricane’s summer impressions are a bit late, but here are my opinions on the shows I’ve seen so far. Yeah, the summer lineup isn’t as strong as the spring and fall seasons. I think there are still a couple gems that shouldn’t be overlooked though.
