This week’s You Might Like It concerns the Japanese freeware adventure game Doukutsu Monogatari, known in the West as Cave Story. It’s excellent for a lot of reasons, but I’ll get to those in a minute. First I have to set the stage. I might as well get the Quick-and-Dirty out of the way before the break.

Well, this isn't the worst place I've woken up with a hangover...

The Quick and Dirty
- Cave Story info, walkthrough, and downloads for the game and translation patch at

- A platformer in the vein of Metroid or Castlevania
- Freeware, made single-handedly by one-man team Studio Pixel
- Other draws: emotive and adorable characters, original weapons and power-up system, holds its own against classics in the platformer genre. It’ll also be coming to the Wii via Wiiware in the future!

Now, I’m going to get a bit…scholarly.

Cave Story is a freeware PC game developed by StudioPixel. If you haven’t heard about this game then you must be living in a cave yourself. It is an excellent platforming shooter reminiscent of the 8-bit Mega Man games and Metroid. The graphics are cute without going overboard with a story that is surprisingly dark. You start the game as an amnesiac warrior (I think I’ve seen this before somewhere) with nothing but your wits and a peashooter to guide you through this giant island in the sky. This game gets hard. Really hard. In fact, the game’s hard mode is not for the faint of heart.

If you have a couple hours to burn, this game is highly recommended. I can’t really find anything bad to say about it. You’re bound to miss some stuff on your first run, which gives you all the more reason to go through it again to pick up that secret weapon or traverse through the game’s well hidden hard mode.

If you’re interested, you can find the game and patch at the Cave Story Tribute Site. Play this with a Logitech gamepad or something. You’ll make your life a lot easier and your fingers will thank you too.
