The much anticipated Clannad After Story has started and reintroduces us to most of the main cast with a baseball match of epic proportions. Hot on the heels of KyoAni’s Clannad TV adaptation, Toei brings us their version of the Clannad story. Toei’s adaptation of Clannad is an abridged Nagisa arc with all the needless filler secondary girls’ arcs removed. Liberties are taken here and there with the story, but unlike the Air movie, the Clannad movie remains much more faithful to the original story. Toei and KyoAni can’t seem to agree on who should voice Key male leads, because the movie has a different seiyuu voicing Okazaki while everyone else retains their original voice. Obvious spoilers and lots of pictures after the jump.

The first subber to get to the punch is not SS-Eclipse surprisingly enough but Eien no Anime. As a Key fanboy it’s my duty to report this proceeding. Even if I watch the movie right away, I don’t feel that I could write an accurate review without completing the TV season first. It looks like it’ll be pretty good though, even if all the Air movie haters are skeptical of Clannad’s chances. Of course all of this is an excuse to play more Brawl.

I actually started this write-up back at episode eight and went from there. With eighteen episodes now under our belts, it looks like I can make a fair summary of Clannad’s ladies. Several of the girls present striking similarities to previous Key girls while a few break free from the mold to be different.
Note that this is just a comparison of similarities, because Key really loves to stick to the archetypes that work. If anything changes as the episodes roll on, I will reflect said changes by editing this work in progress. I’m only going to cover the five main girls, so that means the minor girls are excluded for now. I may add them at a later time though. This post contains obvious spoilers for those who haven’t seen Clannad, Air, or Kanon. I should technically include comparisons to the girls from One ~ To the Radiant Season but whatever. You have been warned.
